Anastasio Alberto Guerra, Jr., age 98, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2022 at his home in Arlington, Texas
Anastasio was born on November 21, 1923 in McAllen, Texas to parents Anastasio A. Guerra Sr. and Berta Guerra (Gonzalez). He graduated from McAllen High School in McAllen, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at Austin and while there enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Commissioned as an officer, he served on the USS ASBD-6 in Guam, the Philippines during World War II. On his return, he was employed as a draftsman, then oversaw the family ranch in Starr County, Texas during the drought of the 1950’s. He returned to McAllen and accepted a position as a draftsman at the Texas Highway Department (now TXDOT). He was subsequently promoted to Relocation Assistance Director in the Right of Way section, where he retired after more than 35 years.
Anastasio was a loving husband, father and a great family man. He married the love of his life, Berta Carmen Cardenas in 1956 and had 5 children together. They were married 60 years before the passing of Berta in 2016.
Anastasio was a scholarly and intelligent man who deeply loved the Arts and Classical music. He enjoyed gardening and landscaping and was very involved in his Catholic church. His family and friends will always remember him as a soft spoken, generous and kind person with a wonderful sense of humor.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Berta Carmen Guerra (Cardenas) of McAllen, Texas; his brothers Julio Guerra of McAllen, Texas and Augusto Guerra of Alamo, Texas; his sisters Irma Garza (Guerra) of Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico and Estefana Vela of McAllen, Texas.
Anastasio is survived by his children, Anastasio A. Guerra III (Maria Cristina) of San Antonio, Texas; Ana M. Guerra O’Neill (Kirt) of San Antonio, Texas; Cristina Y. Jaquish (Michael) of Arlington, Texas; Dr. Carlos A. Guerra (Paula) of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Sylvia I.Horn (Brian) of Kennedale, Texas. He is also survived by his brother Federico Guerra of Edinburg, Texas and his sister Alicia Hawkey of Richfield, Minnesota. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
A rosary is scheduled for 10:30 AM Saturday, December 17, 2022 at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church in Arlington, Texas followed by a funeral Mass and interment at 11:00 AM at the same location.
