Billy Ray Clements, a retired U.S. Navy captain, cradled in the bosom of his family, passed away Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, at home.
Funeral: 10 a.m. Thursday at Emerald Hills Funeral Home. Interment: with military honors in Emerald Hills Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorials: The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Baja School Friends, 1015 Muirfield Drive, Mansfield, Texas 76063, or a charity of choice.
He hailed from Lubbock and was born May 22, 1930. He graduated from high school from the Allen Military Academy in Bryan in 1948. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1953. On the day of his graduation, he married his sweetheart of 10 years, Anna C. Leutwyler, who preceded him in death late last year after 56 years of marriage. As a naval officer, he attained his master's degree in nuclear engineering. His passion was nuclear submarines. He became the commanding officer of the USS Von Steuben, SSBN 632, in 1967. He retired from the Navy in 1974, returning to his home state where he went to work for Texas Utilities. He committed 17 years to Texas Utilities, eventually retiring as a vice president.
Survivors: Two children and their spouses; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many relatives and friends whom he loved dearly.
