Cora May Hurd, 87
November 23, 1923-November 4, 2011
Cora May Hurd was born a twin and the sixth of eight children in Paris, Texas, to George S. and Bessie A. (McFattridge) Kammer. After her mother's death when Cora was 5, the family moved to Weatherford.
In 1944, while working at Convair Defense Base first as a Rosie the Riveter and later a waitress, she met George R. Hurd Jr. They loved to dance at the base and soon married on May 12, 1945, settling in Forest Hill and starting their married life's journey, having daughter, Ruby, and son, Larry (Randy). She supported her husband, who worked for Coca-Cola Bottling Co. for 39 years and was active in the volunteer fire department, the Boy Scouts, the Masonic Lodge, and the Moslah Shrine Directors and Clown units. She and George loved to travel, square dance, bowl, and outings with Shriner friends. Cora was a big fan of Elvis, enjoyed crocheting and was an in demand chef—her chicken and dumplings and pecan pie were family favorites. Cora and George had many happy years dancing with Shriner friends, traveling in their RV, and spending time with their grandchildren, who called them Nana and Granddaddy.
After George died in 1994, Cora went to live with her daughter. Most recently they had moved to The Villas by the Lake in Fort Worth and enjoyed making lovely new friends with the residents at this active seniors apartments. She told everyone that she loved living here!
Cora had several wonderful caregivers that looked after her. The family would like to thank Jeanette, Marilyn, Jerry, Eva, Joe and Holly.
Cora was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, George, her son Randy (Larry), and siblings Lloyd Kammer, Steve Kammer, Jay Kammer, Georgia Lee, twin Ora Fay Brakebill, Ruth Bull and Marcella Dennis.
Cora is survived by daughter Ruby Hurd Harse of Fort Worth; grandchildren Kristi Hurd (Mike) Charron of Burleson, Meredith Harse (Scott) Dobbins of Arlington, Allison Harse of Houston, and Jeff Harse of New York City; great-grandchildren Kylie Dobbins of Arlington and Ty Bailey of Burleson; and daughter-in-law Pam LeFan Hurd of Burleson.
