Jim was born to Wiley W. and Beulah L. Gambrell in Iron City, Tenn., on Feb. 14, 1924. He spent the bulk of his career within the newspaper industry as an educational services director for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Jim was nationally recognized as a moving force behind the movement to teach public school courses using newspapers. Gambrell's interest in newspapers began one Sunday afternoon in the Tennessee hills where he grew up, when he first saw a newspaper, which blew his mind. Gambrell moved to Texas in 1936, at age 13, and began throwing papers and he never looked back.
Jim was an avid fan of bluegrass, gospel, hillbilly and honky-tonk country music. He was a faithful and devoted husband, a supportive father and a very loving grandfather.
