James Maurice Oakes, 83, passed away July 22, 2017 at Community Hospice in Fort Worth after being hospitalized with a rare brain infection.
Funeral Service: 11 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2017 at Emerald Hills Funeral Home.
Interment at Emerald Hills Memorial Park. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at Emerald Hills Funeral Home.
Maurice was born September 27, 1933 in Brenham, Texas to Melvin W. Oakes and Vivian Hoyt Oakes. He was married for 55 years to Geneva May Crow on July 21, 1962. They lived in Forest Hill for 44 years before moving to Weatherford in 2007. Maurice worked at Sperry & Hutchinson Co. (S&H Green Stamps) for 36 years and later at National Medical Care. He was a veteran who served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Maurice served 12 years on the City Council in Forest Hill including 6 years as mayor in the early 1980’s. He also served on numerous Tarrant County and state government committees. He was a member of Couts Memorial United Methodist Church in Weatherford and a previous member of Forest Hill United Methodist Church. Maurice was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be missed dearly by his family.
Preceded in death by his parents, Melvin W. Oakes and Vivian Hoyt Oakes Gumm; sister, Doris and brother, Billy.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Geneva M. Oakes; daughter, Kathy Deen and husband, Pat; son, Steve and wife, Lynn; sister, Marjorie Oakes Jones; four grandchildren; and numerous cousins and other relatives.
