Known affectionately as Brother Jean, Mr. Caviness, retired, was the associate pastor of Trentman Avenue/Pleasantview Baptist Church of Arlington for over 50 years. His great loves were his Lord, his wife, children, grandchildren, his church and singing! He never felt called to be a pastor, but rather to be a pastor's helper, and he did this faithfully for many years as music director, educational director and associate pastor at Trentman/Pleasantview Baptist Church. Music played a very important part in his life and he never turned down an opportunity to sing, even on his deathbed. He had a quick wit, a sharp mind and a kind and tender heart.
He served his country well during World War II in the U.S. Navy as a turret gunner aboard carrier USS Cowpens. After an honorable discharge he met the love of his life, his best friend and faithful partner, Wylma Nelson. They were wed in 1946 and have honeymooned for the past 65 years. Their love story is legendary and their daughter still claims to have never heard them quarrel. Close family members call him "Honey" as that is all they ever heard his wife call him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Conway and Molly Caviness; brothers, Edward and E.G. Caviness; sister, Mary Jane Pledger; and great-grandson, Jonas Phillips.
Survivors: Wife, Wylma Caviness; daughter, Shaunna Smith (husband, Jake, whom Jean loved as a true son); grandchildren, Ashley Hoskins (husband, Matthew), and Zacary Phillips (wife, Brittney); great-grandchildren, Micah Hoskins, Josiah Phillips and Julien Phillips; brothers, Jerry Caviness (wife, Carol) and Bob Caviness; sister-in-law, Bobbie Caviness; niece; Cheryl Campbell; and a host of other family and friends.
