John Lamar Shurley, passed away on Tuesday morning, August 10, 2021 at home in Mansfield, TX. John was born on March 08, 1943 in Forest Park, GA. to John Bevins and Sallie Emma Owen Shurley.
John grew up in Forest Park, GA. and entered the Air Force to serve his country in 1960 serving for 4 years as a Radar Maintenance Tech. He then attended Baptist Bible College at in Springfield, MO. where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Missions. He served in various churches from lay minister to pastor since his graduation from Bible College, beginning in Taylor, S.C. in 1968. In recent years he was a Deacon and faithful member of Pleasantview Baptist Church in Arlington, TX.
John married Mary Ann Shoff in 1967 in Snyder, TX. They were happily married for 54 years. John & Mary Ann moved to Mansfield, TX in 1974, after joining Pleasantview Baptist Church he served in various roles in the church including that of a deacon. He enjoyed being an over the road truck driver, fishing, golf, hunting and just being with family.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John Bevins & Sallie Emma Owens Shurley as well as his sister, Daisy Buchanan.
John is survived by his spouse Mary Ann Shurley of Mansfield, TX.; his sons, James and wife Becky Shurley of Joshua, TX. and David Shurley of Mansfield, TX.; his grandchildren Jonathan Lee Shurley, Julianne Beth Shurley, Justin Owen Shurley and Jacob Phillip Shurley; and his siblings Peggy Hemphill; Ronnie and Carolyn Turpin, and brother Harold Owen Shurley, all residing in the Atlanta, GA. area. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and other relatives.
A memorial service will be held at Pleasantview Baptist Church at 4400 Pleasantview Dr. Arlington, TX. 76017 at Noon, Wed. August 25th. A visitation will be held before the funeral service at 10AM at Pleasantview Baptist Church, where the family will be greeting friends and relatives until 11:45. Burial will follow at DFW National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Pleasantview Baptist Church Missions Fund in John’s memory at 4400 Pleasantview Dr. Arlington, TX. 76017.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to both Pleasantview Baptist Church, their church family, and Bailey & Galyen, Attorneys at Law. We recognize that there are many other that have aided our walk during this time and please understand that those individuals and entities are too numerous to mention and we would certainly forget someone if we tried during this time.
