ARLINGTON- Lynne Ann Pennington, a woman of incredible strength and grace, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on August second from an eight and a half year battle with ovarian cancer.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: A celebration of Lynne's life will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday July 8, 2012 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Arlington, 3321 W. Park Row Drive. Pastor Miriam George will officiate the service.
MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Lynne's honor to Pay it Forward A Hopewell Foundation at 1375 Gilman Road, Fort Worth, Texas 76140. As the founder of the non-profit organization, she was a firm believer that those blessed need to make a difference.
Lynne was born on October 27, 1951 in Lakewood, Ohio to George and Nancy Stearns. She had dreams of becoming an elementary school teacher and graduated with a degree in education from Lockhaven University in Pennsylvania in 1973. That same year, she married her high school sweetheart Adlai Pennington. She loved teaching and challenging children to reach their fullest potential. In 1983 they moved to the great state of Texas where her body enjoyed the warm temperatures. She taught at The Oakridge School from 1984-2002. Her 18 years of dedicated service to Oakridge was evident, as many of her former students and colleagues posted inspirational messages on her CaringBridge page.
Lynne retired from The Oakridge School in 2002 and was footloose and fancy free for two years as she and Adlai traveled and enjoyed a slower pace. She was diagnosed with stage IIIC ovarian cancer in 2004 and her world changed overnight. The next eight and a half years were a battle, but one that she fought with grace, humor and humility. During that time, she became a grandmother to two very special children, Emma and Wyatt and squeezed the very most out of each day given to her.
She enjoyed playing in the pool with her grandchildren, quilting vibrant award winning quilts, eating sushi rolls and miso soup, digging her feet into the sand and surrounding herself with people who inspired her to be a better person. She has no doubt touched the lives of many through teaching, her loyal friendships and her charitable foundation, Pay it Forward a Hopewell Foundation. Her legacy will continue through her family, her foundation and her loyal friends.
Lynne was eternally grateful for the unbelievable staff and caregivers who helped her skew the survival statistics. Less than 1 in 10 women are able to reach the 5 year survival marker when diagnosed at Stage IIIC. She lived eight and a half years and was able to enjoy precious time with family and friends because of the dedicated work of Dr. Hancock, Annette Alexander and Buffy Christian at Texas Oncology in Fort Worth along with Keri Parrish and Patricia Wood of New Century Hospice. This talented and caring group pushed the limits of medicine to allow Lynne to live her life to the fullest.
Please join the family in celebrating Lynne's life as an incredibly courageous, loving and inspirational woman immediately following the service at Reds Roadhouse (1170 E. Kennedale Parkway). In true Lynne fashion, she has had her hand in organizing the celebration down to the food and music!
SURVIVORS: Loving husband of 38 years, Adlai Pennington; daughter, Taylor Pennington Gray and husband Blaine Gray, two grandchildren, Emma and Wyatt; sister, Mary Jo Stearns; brother, Jeff Stearns and wife Judy; and a host of other family and friends.
