Nancy Locke Cox, age 77 passed away on the 23rd of March 2022 in Arlington, Texas, surrounded by family. Nancy was born on the 22nd of October 1944 in Bakersfield, California to her parents LC (Jack) Locke and Lois (Toadie) Brown. During that time, Jack was a core analyst in the California oil fields during World War II. Jack and Toadie moved back to Texas shortly after Nancy was born.
Nancy grew up in Midland Texas where her father Jack co-founded Rotary Labs for analyzing oil well cores. In her early days, Nancy, her parents and sister Muriel lived next to future President Herbert Walker Bush and his wife Barbara. Barbara taught Nancy how to sew – a passion Nancy used to sew Halloween costumes, cheerleading uniforms, dresses, clothes, towel wraps and crafts. Jack was very active in the Masons, and Toadie was active with Eastern Star, serving as a Worthy Matron. Nancy was a Rainbow Girl Worthy Advisor and later an installing officer for many other Rainbow Girl installations. Inspired by her mother, Nancy went on to be a Girl Scout Troop leader for both Darlene and Vicky.
Nancy first met Kenny Cox on the first day of strings class in Junior High School in 1958 while she was in the 7th grade and he was in the 9th grade. Their first date was a trip to the movies to see “Around the World in 80 days” which according to the pair wasn’t the “greatest of dates” with neither of them having much to say. Their next date was a more comfortable double date which began a long courtship with many interruptions. The pair were married on the 29th of August 1964 in Midland Texas. They were happily married for 57 plus years with two beautiful daughters and a lifetime of treasured memories. Nancy graduated from Robert E Lee High School with other notable alums Tommy Lee Jones and general (Retired) Tommy Franks. Nancy and Ken moved to Arlington, Texas in 1965 where they raised their daughters (Darlene and Vicky) and remained for the rest of her life.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents Jack and Toadie Locke.
Nancy is survived by her husband of 57years, Ken Cox, their daughters Darlene (Randy) Jensen and Vicky (Steven) North, grandchildren Emma and Laken Jensen, Melanie and Jack Ritter, sister Muriel Locke, Ken’s brother and wife, Don and Susan Cox, nieces Amy and Joy Cox, Sarah (Steve) Johns, Gale Nelson, and Dana Nelson (Bret Eikenhorst), great niece Emmy, Shy McClung (a dear friend whom Nancy and Ken considered a “third daughter”), and many dear cousins and friends.
To quote Jimmy Stewart from one of Nancy’s favorite movies, “It’s a Wonderful Life” – “Remember, no man is a failure who has friends”.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in honor of Nancy Cox to Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, or the charity of your choice.
