Roberto Cortez Mendoza Sr., 87, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on January 23, 2024, at his home, in Forest Hill, Texas. He was born on January 20, 1937, in Malakoff, Texas to Reyes and Candelaria (Cortez) Mendoza.
Robert “Rusty” grew up in Everman, Texas. Rusty attended Everman High School and soon after began upholstering furniture for various businesses before settling at Harbison Fischer, where he retired after 20+ years. After attempting retirement, he returned to the work force and spent 10+ years working for Kennedale ISD. During his employment for Kennedale Junior High School, he was known as “Grandpa” and would often give students money for lunch. His smile was infectious, and his sense of humor was unmatched. Rusty enjoyed attending church and in 2006 he completed a bible study course. He had an affinity for life and for people. He was loved and spent his last days relaxing on his porch enjoying the peaceful sounds of his goats and chickens.
Rusty was preceded in death by his parents, Reyes and Candelaria Mendoza; sisters, Mary Durham and Mary Ann Matthews; brothers, Herminio Mendoza, Joe Angel Mendoza, Margarito Mendoza, Reyes Mendoza Jr., Domingo Mendoza.
Rusty is survived by his sons, Robert Jr. and wife Kim Mendoza, Robby Dale and wife Beverly Mendoza, Tony Mendoza, Johnny and wife Debbie Calhoun; his daughters, Tina and husband David Adams, Lisa and husband Phil Roper, Anita and husband Doug Fowler, Liza and husband Roger Baker, Terri and husband Ignacio Soto, Candelaria “Cande” and husband Matt Sumpter; sisters, Matilda Salas and Barbara Martinez; 30 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.
