After a brave fight with cancer, Sally Jean Jones went to be with the Lord December 20, 2018, at the age of 74, completely cured. She is lovingly remembered by her family and friends.
Sally was born September 10, 1944, in Hollywood, CA, the second child of James Newton Sligar and Christine Sligar. She grew up in California, Arizona, and Colorado. Her dad died when she was in high school, which brought the family to Lubbock, TX, nearer her grandparents. At the Texas Tech Baptist Student Union, she met a tall, handsome young man named James Larry Jones. Their love story lasted for 51 years and included three beloved children.
At an early age, Sally believed that Jesus died for her sins, and in every area of her life, she adorned the Gospel with her good works, making it believable to those around her as she continued to trust and serve Him all the days of her life.
She loved her husband, faithfully serving him through many good years along with several years of difficult sickness. She loved her kids, giving them a happy, loving home, and a Christian education. She loved her 17 grandkids and 3 great-grandkids, delighting in each new accomplishment. She loved her church family and pastors, always willing to serve and give. She loved holding those babies in the nursery! She loved people! Not only her family, life-long friends, students, fellow teachers, but also bankers, pharmacists, doctors, nurses, neighbors, and complete strangers were the recipients of cookies, brownies, notes, gifts, and friendship.
Her home had a revolving door, with family and friends coming and going, always with a little gift from her as they left. She loved shopping for a good deal at the stores and had quite a stash of coupons in her car door, but she could hardly pass a garage sale sign without stopping!
As a young girl, she dreamed of being a teacher. Her patience and love made her the “favorite teacher” of many students at Pantego Christian Academy and Fitzgerald Elementary. She reluctantly retired after 45 years!
Sally was preceded in death by her parents and her dear husband, Larry Jones. She is survived by her older brother, David Sligar and his wife,Theresa, by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Jeff Young of Bonham,TX, by her son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Vanessa Jones of Flower Mound, TX, by her daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Shawn Bettes of Corinth, TX, and by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, and cousins.
There will be a Celebration of her life on January 6, 2019.
Time and place to still be determined.
