During his senior year he joined the U.S Army Reserves serving actively from 1957-1958 and was honorably discharged in 1964. Sam attended Texas Tech University for 2 years from 1958-1960, but was unable to finish his degree due to a serious car accident in July of 1960. Sam worked for Dun and Bradstreet in Amarillo until the summer of 1962. While home he ran into his highschool sweetheart and love of his life, Glenda McGibbon and on October 22, 1962 they were married in Fort Worth and lived in the Fort Worth and Arlington area all of their married life with their three children.
Sam was born a salesman and worked in sales all his life in one aspect or the other. He worked in insurance sales, pharmaceutical sales, real estate investments, oil and gas investments and owned and operated three furniture stores until multiple health issues caused his "semi" retirement. Until the time of his passing he worked with his son, Ed in an oil field rental equipment company called Wildblue Equipment. Sam was very active in his church, Bethel Temple Assembly of God being on the Board of Decons and Head Usher. In later years the Lord blessed him with a mind for creating poetry of a country sort based on spritual, funny or crazy experiences throughout his life. He also wrote the lyrics to some of the songs Glenda wrote music for.
Sam was quite a family man and loved Glenda and his family dearly. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son and grandsons and loved attending his grandkids sporting and music events when health permitted. Sam was a fun person and loved to visit with his family and friends and attend Glenda's singing outings.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy and Lorene Carter.
