A Blessed Life

Walter Gene Arnold was born February 8,1933 in Austin, Texas to the union of J.B. and Juanita Arnold. His parents were affectionately known as “Skeeter”and “Slick”. They raised Walter, his brother, J.B. Jr and sister Jenice on the foundations of love for God and family. Walter accepted Christ at an early age, but his biblical knowledge and faith grew as he matured. Walter attended L.C. Anderson High School where he excelled in athletics. After high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he honorably served and received a National Defense Service Medal. After his military service, he married and relocated his family to California. He established a career in the healthcare industry at the Veteran Affairs Hospital of Palo Alto. He also joined Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church of East Palo Alto, CA. Walter was blessed with a beautiful singing voice. His voice was often compared to gospel great, James Cleveland. Walter used his gift to bless others as a lead singer of the choir and as a member of a gospel quartet. He later joined Bethel Missionary Baptist Church of Oakland, CA where he continued to sing gospel as one of the choir’s lead singers.

Walter eventually returned to Austin and married Joanne Rhodes. They shared many happy times. Walter enjoyed being surrounded by his children and other family members. He enjoyed investing in real estate, hosting parties for his family, playing dominos, cheering on the Dallas Cowboys and watching television westerns. He will be remembered for his warm hugs, his funny stories and his love for fashion and automobiles. Walter took pride in dressing well, driving a nice car, and providing a nice home for his family. He often shared wisdom and financial advice with his children. Walter passed away peacefully September 23, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, his siblings, sons Charles “JC” Jones, Anthony “Tony” Arnold, Sr., Eugene “Skeeter” Barkley, daughter, Elezer Marie “Lisa” Jones, daughter in law, Janice “Cookie” Arnold and grandson, Duane Barkley, Jr. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Joann Arnold, children, Walter “Skip” Arnold Jr. (Cheryl), Barry Arnold, Pamela Stevens-Baker, Duane Barkley (Brenda), Stanley Arnold (Joyce) and Rebecca Arnold, 23 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, nephews, nieces and relatives.
